‘Bunko’ is a Japanese word, whose original meaning is ‘storage of books’. Mrs. Hanako Muraoka, a famous author, opened her lost son Michio’s library to the children of the local community in 1951, and since then such private libraries are spread fast and called ‘Bunko.’ |
A Bunko is not only a place to read or borrow good books. It is a place for many activities; story telling, word games, making up own story books and singing songs. The activities differ from Bunko to Bunko, but every Bunko has two activities in common, a collection of good books well suited to the children of the community, and reading guidance given by volunteers. |
“IC Bunko” is a Bunko for children who have more than two cultural backgrounds such as children have resided overseas for years and who speak foreign languages, or for children whose parents have different nationalities. IC Bunko are modeled on and foster the same spirit as Japanese Bunko. |
The first IC Bunko, “Dan Dan Bunko”, was started by Mrs. Opal Dann and Japanese ladies at Higashiyama, Meguro-ku, Tokyo in Sept. 1977. Though there were 5 returnee children at beginning, the number increased quickly until the waiting list was flooded. The IC Bunko Association (ICBA) was founded in June 1979 so that it would encourage and support the challenges of establishing new IC Bunko. |
The ICBA is a non-profit-making organization, so it needs the support of Japan Overseas Educational Services (JOES), Japanese Board on Books for Young People (JBBY), and several embassies, publishers, authors, educators etc. The ICBA acts as a liaison between IC Bunko, provides information and organizes lectures on subjects relevant to the work of IC Bunko staff. The ICBA also helps in the foundation of new IC Bunko, including French, German, Spanish, Italian and other languages beside English. |
